Last weekend I headed to my nearest Sephora and perused the perfume aisle. I was on a mission to pick out the perfect scent for me. I had just gotten rid of some perfume bottles that were old and the perfume wasn’t smelling quite as good anymore. I’d stuck with the same fragrance for the past few years (Ralph Lauren’s Hot, for the curious) and I was determined to get something new.

Buying new womens perfume when you aren’t sure what you want can be overwhelming. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to stick with the same exotic type fragrance or go completely another way with it. Picking a new fragrance is like picking a new attitude. It’s going to be what you wear every day, something people associate with you. So I started picking up random bottles that just looked pretty and trying them out. That was a bit chaotic.

I wound up leaving empty handed but with a better understanding of what I like in fragrances. I hadn’t even touched most of the perfumes that were available, so I’ll be back. I think I’ll stick with spicy oriental for the summer. I like something with a little kick, just like me.

Ever had those perfume bottles that sit on your dresser for months, maybe even years, without being touched? It’s not that you don’t use perfume anymore but maybe you switched scents. Or maybe you found that old bottle recently hidden in the back of a drawer. Do you dare put it on? Has it gone bad?

Well, the idea of perfume going bad is actually a myth. Perfume can’t “go bad” or be “spoiled” in the same way perishables are spoiled. They can change color and scent after a long period of time, however. Sometimes you can smell the alcohol in an old womens perfume much stronger than it used to be.

Most perfumes, when stored properly, can last 3 to 5 years from their production date. The date is often printed on the box and bottom of the bottle. But if you still aren’t sure, there’s a couple of ways to tell if the perfume is still ok. First is a scent test that you can do by spraying it onto a tissue and letting it air. If it smells funny, it’s probably not as good anymore. If the liquid itself looks like it has gotten darker, that’s another indicator that things have changed.

It happens. You aren’t paying attention and your fragrance gets knocked over. Maybe it was a slip of your hand, or maybe the cat jumped up on your counter. Whatever it was, there’s now womens perfume spilled and cleaning something with that much of a fragrance can be tough. It can also stain surfaces due to the contents in it. But never fear, there are some ways to take care of the spill.

First, you should quickly use a soft, dry sponge to absorb as much of the spill as you can before it seeps into the surface. This is especially important with wood as it can change the color. A wet vacuum will be successful if you spill on a carpeted area.

Baking soda can help clean up the rest of the spill, but then you after worry about the after effects of the excess fragrance. Use the one thing that’s built for eating odors; cat litter! You don’t have to pour it on the site, but have open bags near it. It’ll help absorb the smell. Light a few candles as well to help reduce the smell.

Don’t freak out the next time you spill perfume bottles. If you act fast you won’t have a major problem.
